Making Paper Lace With The Fiskars Sunburst Punch:
One of the topics explored by paperlaces.com is "Making your own paper lace". There are so many ways that this can be done, but one of the easiest ways to do it involves using Fiskars punches. Fiskars manufactures a variety of punches, including border punches, embossing punches, corner punches, and circle border punches. In some cases, creating your paper lace is as easy as choosing a paper, choosing a punch, and punching. Simple! Yet the results are gorgeous. Here's How to Make These Paper Lace Borders:
- I started with a plain sheet of neutral brown/ kraft cardstock . (These paper laces were all made from the same sheet of kraft cardstock; they do appear to be different colors, but that's because of all the different colored inks I applied to them in the last step.)
- I used my Fiskars border punch in the sunburst pattern to punch the die-cut, scalloped lacy pattern. Fiskars border punches are wonderful to punch with, because they have guides that help you to align your pattern. This helps you to avoid making mistakes when you punch.
- I cut the lower edge using the orange-handled pair of Fiskars Paper Edgers, otherwise known as the "mini scallop" pattern. Now, I know a lot of scrapbookers who make fun of decorative scissors. Yes, they are kind of "old school", but I use them ALL THE TIME when making my own handmade paper lace. And the "mini scallop" pair of scissors is the pair that I use the most often. They are really versatile and they add a nice finishing touch to just about any paper lace you'd want to make. You could actually use just about any pair of paper edgers to finish the edge of this paper lace though.
- I inked the paper laces with various inks: Tim Holz Distress Inks and Fluid Chalks. (The inking is optional, but it really adds a nice touch to your finished paper lace.)
Greeting Cards Incorporating Paper Lace Made Using Fiskars Paper Punches

Basic Cardmaking Instructions For All The Greeting Cards Shown:
Use Strathmore White Bristol Board as the basis of the card. I prefer smooth finish Bristol board, but vellum finish or any other finish would work fine. Actually any heavy paper or heavyweight cardstock would probably work OK. I recommend bristol board because it is hefty enough to withstand being painted on, inked, chalked, glued, collaged, and layered. The cards shown here have lots of layers and inking. In my experience, Bristol board stands up to abuse a lot better than cardstock does. Cut the bristol board into greeting card sized pieces and fold them in half using your bone folder. These will become the actual card. You will add papers and embellishments on top of this part.- If your pad is 8.5"x11", cut the bristol board in half so that you have two 5.5" x 8.5" pieces of bristol board.
- If your pad is 11" x 14", make one cut at 8.5" so that you will have an 8.5"x11" piece and a 5.5" x 11" piece. Then cut the 8.5"x11" piece in half as above.

- Using the kraft cardstock and the Fiskars Sunburst punch, make the paper lace as shown above, and set it aside.
- Follow the instructions shown above under "basic cardmaking instructions" for making the card using bristol board.
- Cut a 4.25" x 5.5" piece of Basic Grey's "East of the Sun" paper, ink the edges if you like, and adhere it to the base of the card.
- Using your Fiskars "Cloud" paper edgers, cut a strip of Basic Grey's "Deirdre" paper. The strip should be approx 2.5" wide (the scalloped part) by 5.5" (the straight edge.) Adhere it on top of the card.
- Attach the Yellow Lace Eyelet Wild Saffron label on top of that.
- Attach the handmade kraft paper lace on top of that.
- Ink the Inque Boutique "Great Shapes Journaling" stamp around the edges, but avoid inking the lines in the center of the stamp. (Well, unless you want the lines to appear. It's your choice.) If ink does get on the lines, you can wipe it off with a tissue or q-tip. Stamp on Basic Grey Perhaps Snow Queen paper. Cut around the stamp with the Fiskars mini scallop paper edgers. Adhere to the card.
- Stamp 3 different sizes of the flowers from the Bella Flora stamp set using different colors of ink. Use gel pens to emphasize the edges of the flowers where necessary. Cut around the edges of the flowers with Fiskars mini scallop scissors. Layer the flowers together and fasten them in the center with the Hot off the Press brad. Adhere to the card.
- Add your own personalized greeting inside, send and enjoy.

- Pink Cardstock

- Paper: Making Memories Boho Chic Lauren
- Strathmore White Bristol Board.
- Stamps: Bella Flora Mini Stamp Set by Inque Boutique.
- Dye Inks by Rubber Stampede.
- Colorbox Fluid Chalk
.
- Sticker: Creative Imaginations / Urban Gypsy / Sonnets by Sharon Soneff
- Inks: Fluid Chalk plus Rubber Stampede Dye Inks
- Pink Brad. The one I used on this card is by Accent Depot/ Hot Off the Press. I got mine on ebay, but the seller I bought from doesn't have any more listed for sale. I think the "Elements" light pink brads from American Crafts I linked to look comparable, though.
- Purple Band Under the Floral Stamp: That’s a garlic wrapper from some garlic I bought at Trader Joe’s. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! Haha. But if you don’t have a Trader Joe’s near you, just substitute a scrap of either purple floral paper or a purple paisley paper for this.
- Plus Glitter Gel Pens
- And Adhesive of your choice.
- Using pink cardstock and the Fiskars Sunburst punch, make the paper lace as shown above. Ink the paper lace with a variety of brightly colored pink and purple inks for a subtle variegated effect. Set the paper lace aside to be used later.
- Follow the instructions shown above under "cardmaking basics" for making the card using bristol board.
- Cut a 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" piece of the Making Memories Boho Chic Lauren purple paper.
- Stamp in the lower right corner using purple ink plus the larger corner flourish stamp from the Bella Flora stamp set by Inque Boutique.
- Adhere the stamped Boho Chic paper onto the front of the card
- Adhere the paper lace onto the front of the card overtop of the stamped Boho Chic paper
- Stick the Creative Imaginations Sonnets sticker onto the front of the greeting card; it will be stuck overtop of the paper lace and part of the stamped image on the paper.
- If you were able to find the same garlic wrapper at Trader Joe's, cut out a part of it and attach that overtop of the Sonnets sticker. If you weren't able to find the garlic wrapper, choose a piece of purple printed paper (either floral or paisley would be great, but you could use pretty much any patterned paper you like.) Cut a scrap of it and attach that overtop of the Sonnets sticker.
- Stamp the larger flower stamp from the Bella Flora stamp set by Inque boutique. I stamped it onto a scrap of Boho Chic purple paper. It doesn't matter too much which paper you use, most papers would work fine. I stamped the flower using a vibrant fuschia/ pink-ish purple ink.
- Outline around the edges of the stamped flower using glitter gel pen.
- Cut out the flower using the Fiskars Mini Scallop Paper Edgers Scissors.
- Attach the pink brad in the center of the flower.
- Trace around the brad with a glitter gel pen if desired. (I did this for additional emphasis on the flower center.)
- Attach the flower to the front of the greeting card.
- Send and enjoy!

- Punch: Fiskars Sunburst Border Punch
- "Sari" floral patterned paper and "Dancing Shoes" distressed pink paper from the Basic Grey "Perhaps" collection. I recommend using the small sized paper in the 6 x 6 Perhaps pad.

- Using Fiskars Mini Scallop Paper Edgers or scalloped decorative scissors, cut out a piece of BasicGrey's Sari paper slightly smaller than 3 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches. Attach to the front of the card on top of the "Dancing Shoes" patterned paper.
- Adhere the hand punched paper laces (sunburst design) on top of the patterned papers as shown.

- Take your epoxy sticker and stick it onto the shape you cut out in the step above.
- Attach the sticker and cutout shape onto the Great Shapes journaling block cutout.
- Outline the epoxy sticker with glitter gel pen to make it stand out. (I used glitter gel pen with purple ink.) Doodle scallops all around if desired, if you want to make the card look exactly like mine. In retrospect I'm thinking I might skip the doodles if I were going to do this card over again, but that's up to you.
- Adhere the Great Shapes journaling block cutout and epoxy sticker combo onto the front of the card.
- Outline around the outsides of the paper lace to make it stand out.
- Personalize the inside of the greeting card with stamps and a handwritten message to the recipient.
- Send and enjoy!
